SINGAPORE, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- China stands firm for cooperation with the members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and sincerely hopes to build a peaceful neighborhood, a senior Chinese official said here on Friday.
"China consistently pushes for mutually beneficial cooperation with ASEAN countries including Singapore, and backs the leading role played by the ASEAN in regional cooperation," Zhou Yongkang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said at a meeting with Singaporean President Tony Tan Keng Yam.
Zhou, who is on a two-day visit to Singapore, said China sincerely hopes to peacefully coexist and jointly develop with neighboring countries as well as other nations around the world.
"China's policy has been consistent. China's attitude is sincere. We are playing an active role in regional affairs," Zhou said, adding China is willing to continue communication and coordination with Singapore, and work together to safeguard and promote regional peace, stability and long-term prosperity.
Tan said Singapore and China are good friends, and bilateral cooperation between the two countries has covered various areas.
"We share common views on many issues and there are many common interests among us," he said.
Echoing Tan, Zhou said the China-Singapore relationship has been a model for the peaceful coexistence of countries of different size, which has brought concrete benefits to the two countries and contributes to the stability and prosperity of the whole Asia.
Singapore is the first leg of Zhou's two-Asian-country tour. His next stop is Turkmenistan.
