Lao, Chinese defense ministers meet on military ties

VIENTIANE, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- Defense ministers of Laos and China discussed military ties and international and regional security situations during a meeting here Friday.

Visiting Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie said the two militaries have conducted fruitful exchanges and cooperation in areas such as high-level visits, personnel training and border patrols in recent years.

He said China is ready to make joint efforts with Laos to strengthen strategic coordination, deepen reciprocal cooperation and push forward the the further development of military ties between the two nations.

Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Douangchay Phichit expressed gratitude to the Chinese side for its support and aid in Laos' national and military construction.

He said Laos is willing to boost exchanges and cooperation with the Chinese side and make active endeavors to safeguard the common interests of the two countries and regional peace and stability.

Liang arrived here Thursday on an official goodwill visit at Phichit's invitation.
