BEIJING, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- Chinese people have been urged by a senior leader of the Communist Party of China (CPC) to learn from Zhang Lili, a teacher who lost her legs while saving two students from an onrushing bus.

At a seminar held at the Great Hall of the People on Tuesday, Li Changchun, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, spoke highly of Zhang's self-sacrificing spirit.

He said Zhang was a role model that could influence others to strengthen convictions, cultivate nobel character and promote sound social trends.

On May 8, Zhang saved two students from an onrushing bus in northeast China's Heilongjiang province. The 29-year-old teacher at the No. 19 Middle School in the city of Jiamusi, was crossing a road outside the school's main gate when she saw the two students standing in the way of the bus.

She successfully pushed the students out of harm's way, but was unable to avoid the bus herself.

Zhang joined the CPC on July 1, the Party's 91st founding anniversary.
