BEIJING, August 28 (Xinhuanet) – Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, as one of the five ethnic autonomous regions of China, is the only provincial level Hui autonomous region and also the largest populous community of Hui people across the country. Located in the east of Northwest China, Ningxia has been renowned as an oasis in the hinterland since ancient times and is now well-known as one of China's ten places of the richest production. The region has a population of 6.395 million, of which the Hui population is 2.287 million, accounting for 35.8%. The region's GDP has maintained double-digit growth for twelve consecutive year, higher than the national average. In 2011, it reached RMB 206.08 billion Yuan, or an increase of 12%.
●Four Major Competitive Edges
Plenty of energy resources: Ningxia has over 50 types of proven minerals. In China, Ningxia's proven coal reserve ranks the sixth, its per capita coal output ranks the third, and its per capita electricity output ranks the first.
Rich agricultural resources: Ningxia is among China's four major gravity irrigation areas, ten best pastures and twelve production bases of commodity grain. It is selected by the State Council as a demonstration zone in terms of modern agriculture, water-saving and dry-land farming and ecological agriculture. 80% of Ningxia's agricultural products are organic.
Unique tourist resources: Ningxia is endowed with a number of natural and cultural heritages, including Helan Mountain, Liupan Mountain, the Yellow River, Shahu Lake, Shapotou Scenic Spot, ancient Great Wall, Zhenbeibu Film Studio, for which Ningxia is known as one of the tourist destinations in West China.
Distinctive competitiveness of opening up as an inland region. Ningxia is located at the geometric center of East Asian Continent and Northern China, and on the crucial point of the airways connecting China with the Middle East, Europe and Africa, known as Yabulai airway. So, Ningxia is able to establish a low-cost channel facilitating logistics between China and Arab States.

Ningxia endeavors to build itself into a pilot zone of westwards inland open economy and strives to set up three bases and five centers.
Three bases: The three bases refer to production and service base of halal food and Muslim commodities with international significance; an important base in western China receiving shifted foreign and domestic industries; China's personnel training base oriented for Arab states and Islamic world.
Five centers: The five centers refer to certification center of halal food and Muslim commodities; processing and design center of halal food and Muslim commodities; international trade and exhibition center of halal food and Muslim commodities; logistics center oriented for the drive of opening up to the west; recreation center with distinctive features.
