BEIJING, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- An Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) youth camp focused on skilled trades and technology was inaugurated Friday in Beijing.
Chinese State Councilor Ma Kai announced the opening of the youth camp and voiced a call for furthering cooperation among APEC members by promoting understanding and friendship among skilled young people.
Human resources development has become an important engine for boosting the economy and employment, and the Chinese government attaches great importance to competence-building and skills-training efforts for young people, Ma said.
He said China highly values vocational education that has helped the country remarkably improve the levels of competency and skill training among its young generations.
"We are willing to share related experience and information with APEC members," Ma told over 90 campers from 17 APEC member states, including the United States, Mexico, China, Russia and Japan.
He noted efforts in technological innovation and economic development need skilled youth to play an active role.
The APEC Youth Skills Camp is proceeding under China's APEC Skills Development Promotion Project, which was proposed by Chinese President Hu Jintao. The purpose of the event is to promote vocational skills training and generate awareness for the importance of skilled trades in economies around the world.
