BEIJING, July 3 (Xinhua) -- China on Tuesday expressed congratulations to Enrique Pena Nieto for winning Mexico's presidential elections.

"President Hu Jintao has sent a congratulatory message to Nieto on his election as Mexico's president," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin at a regular press conference.

China has always attached great importance to developing friendly cooperative relations with Mexico, according to Liu.

With the joint efforts of both sides, bilateral relations have maintained sound development, and pragmatic cooperation in various fields has deepened since the establishment of diplomatic ties 40 years ago, he said.

China is ready to work with Mexico to continue promoting the sustained, healthy and stable development of the strategic partnership, so as to benefit the two countries as well as their people, the spokesman added.

Nieto declared victory on Sunday night after a preliminary count by Mexico's Federal Electoral Institute, marking the return to power of the Institutional Revolutionary Party

Initial results showed that Nieto won 37.93 to 38.55 percent of the vote, compared with his nearest rival, Democratic Revolution Party candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who finished with around 31 percent.
