BEIJING, Aug. 11 (Xinhuanet) -- Malaysia's exports in June increased by 5 percent from a year ago to 64.3 billion ringgit (about 16.38 billion U.S. dollars), overthrowing economists' expectations of a 2.2-percent decline.
Compared with May, exports of June were up 3.03 billion ringgit (about 770.8 million U.S. dollars), or 5 percent, which was the highest growth rate during a twelve-month period, according to data released by Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI).
At the same time, Malaysia's June imports fell by 1.5 percent, expanding the trade surplus to 7.98 billion ringgit (about 2.03 billion U.S. dollars) from 5.5 billion ringgit (about 1.40 U.S. dollars) in May.
In addition, affected by the weak global demand and commodity prices decline, Malaysia’s exports and imports of the first half of this year fell by 3.1 percent and 2.6 percent respectively, compared with the same period in 2014. And the total trade volume declined by 2.9 percent.
