TOKYO, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened higher early Thursday following a rally on Wall Street the previous day.
At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was up 150.67 points, or 0.89 percent, from Wednesday to 17,036.00.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange soared 12.85 points, or 0.94 percent, to 1, 372.65.
Major gainers included air and marine transport and pharmaceutical issues.
