SEOUL, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors, South Korea's top two automakers, set their 2015 sales target at 8.2 million units after topping the 8 million mark in 2014.

Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Chung Mong-koo said in his New Year's remarks to employees Friday that the group, the holding company of the two carmakers, aimed to produce and sell 8.2 million cars this year.

The two automakers sold a combined 8,004,696 cars in 2014, surpassing the 8 million mark for the first time in the group's history. Hyundai sold 4,963,000 cars last year, with Kia's car sales reaching 3,041,696 units.

Hyundai aimed to sell 5.05 million cars this year, with Kia targeting sales of 3.15 million units in 2015.

Chung said last year's 8 million-unit sales of cars would enhance brand images of the companies and influence this year's sales positively.

The chairman said the company would make efforts to enhance brand value by investing more into research and development and raising the effectiveness of the company's production and sales system.

He added that it would not take long for the group to produce and sell more than 9 million units.
