Britain's new car sales rise 5.6 pct in September

LONDON, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- The number of new cars registered in September rose 5.6 percent annually to 425,861, the biggest September since 2004, data released on Monday showed.

It also marked the 31st consecutive month of growth in the new car market, with registrations for the year-to-date reaching 1,958,196, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

The new '64' numberplate, which was introduced in September and could reduce insurance and maintenance costs for new car buyers, drove September car registrations to a decade high, said the SMMT.

"September's strong performance underlined the continuing robustness of the UK new car market, particularly in the context of last September's bumper volumes," said Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive.

Ford Fiesta was on the top of the best sellers, with 23,266 units being sold in September. Other best sellers included Ford Focus, Volkswagen Golf, Vauxhall Corsa, and Volkswagen Polo.

"Demand for the new 64-plate has been boosted by intensifying confidence in the UK economy, with consumers attracted by a wide range of exciting, increasingly fuel-efficient, new cars. In the months since March -- which saw an 18 percent jump in registrations -- the growth has shown signs of levelling off as the market starts to find its natural running rate," Mike Hawes added.

The automotive industry was a vital part of the British economy accounting for more than 60 billion pounds turnover and 12 billion pounds value added. It accounted for 10 percent of total British export of goods.

The SMMT was the trade association for the British motor industry, which covered companies of all sizes in the industry including supply chain, aftermarket, manufacturing and distribution.
