World Cup to generate one million jobs in Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO, June 20 (Xinhua) -- The 2014 World Cup, which is taking place in 12 Brazilian cities, will generate a total of one million jobs in Brazil, state news agency Agencia Brasil said on Friday.

According to the agency, the World Cup will also inject 30 billion reals (13.4 billion U.S. dollars) into the Brazilian economy.

The figures feature in a report released earlier in the day by economic research institution Fipe and commissioned by Brazil' s Ministry of Tourism.

The figures are significant, said Vicente Neto, head of Brazil's official tourism promotion agency Embratur. Out of the one million jobs, only 200,000 are temporary, while the others are more permanent positions.

"It is an extraordinary human legacy," Neto said.

According to Neto, another positive aspect of the games was that hotel occupancy in the 12 World Cup host cities was 45 percent above expectations.

Large-scale international events, such as the World Cup, will also serve to boost Brazil as a tourist destination, leading to even more jobs and income, he said.

Brazil is set to host the 2016 Summer Olympics, which will take place in Rio.
