MANILA, June 10 (Xinhua) -- Unemployment rate in the Philippines declined to 7 percent in April from 7.6 percent registered in the same period last year, local statistics agency said Tuesday.

Figures from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) showed that the number of employed persons in the country rose to 38.66 million in April, from 37.01 million recorded a year ago.

PSA data showed that the Metro Manila capital region continued to have the highest unemployment rate at 10.4 percent.

Among the unemployed persons in April, 61.7 percent were males. Almost half or 49.8 percent belonged to the age group 15 to 24 years. More than 20 percent of the unemployed were college graduates.

The underemployment rate, however, remained in double digits. PSA data showed that underemployment is at 18.2 percent in April, lower than the 19.2 percent posted in the same period last year.

"While the labor and employment situation in the country has shown a respectable improvement in April 2014, the quality of employment remains a concern," said Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Arsenio Balisacan in a statement.

Balisacan said the Philippine government will continue implementing its "multidimensional approach" to improve the labor market's performance.

PSA said the April unemployment data excluded figures from the province of Leyte in central Philippines which was battered by typhoon Haiyan (local name: Yolanda) last November.
