WASHINGTON, June 4 (Xinhua) -- The private sector of the United States added the fewest jobs in four months in May, said a private survey released Wednesday.

U.S. private companies added 179,000 jobs in May, down from 215, 000 jobs in April and the smallest monthly gain since January, said the National Employment Report released jointly by Automatic Data Processing (ADP) and Moody's Analytics, based on a monthly survey. Economists were expecting an increase of 210,000 private jobs for May.

"After a strong post-winter rebound in April, job growth in May slowed somewhat," said Carlos Rodriguez, president and chief executive officer of ADP. "The 179,000 jobs added figure is higher than May of last year and in line with the average over the past twelve months."

In May, small and medium-sized businesses accounted for most of the employment gains, adding 143,000 jobs, while large businesses with over 500 employees added 37,000 jobs, according to the report.

Employment in the service sector rose by 150,000 jobs in May, down from an increase of 194,000 in April. Meanwhile, the manufacturing sector added 10,000 jobs in May, up from 2,000 in April and the most since last December. "The job market has yet to break out from the pace of growth that has prevailed over the last three years," said Mark Zandi, chief economist of Moody's Analytics.

The ADP survey studied data from private businesses with more than 23 million workers on payrolls but excludes government job growth. The Labor Department will release its jobs report for May Friday.
