Japan exports record farm, marine products in 2013

English.news.cn   2014-02-12 10:11:00

TOKYO, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- Japan saw a record number of farm and marine products exportation in 2013, which surged 22.4 percent from 2012 to 550.6 billion yen (about 5.36 billion U.S. dollars), the country's farm ministry said Wednesday.

The ministry attributed the sharp rise to the yen's weakness, as well as an increasing demand for traditional Japanese food " washoku" after it was added to the UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list last year, Japan's Kyodo News reported.

According to the report, receding concerns about radioactive contamination after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster also helped expand Japanese exports.

The previous annual exportation record for farm and marine products was 532.8 billion yen (5.19 billion dollars) in 1984, while the ministry aims to double the amount by 2020.
