BEIRUT, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- The annual passengers flow at Beirut Rafic Hariri International Airport has hit an unprecedented record since its founding, as the number exceeded 6 million, the civil aviation department at this airport said.
The number of passengers reached 6,006,905 passengers despite the negative pressure which resulted in the decrease of the transit passengers, according to the statistics released by the civil aviation department at Beirut Rafic Hariri International airport.
The statistics showed that the number of passengers recorded an increase of 5 percent more than that of last year's same period.
It pointed that these figures have been registered despite the sharp decrease in the number of transit passengers at the airport which recorded 14,871 passengers only, a decrease of 319 percent from the same period last year.
It added that with the number of passengers reaching 6 million, the Beirut Rafic Hariri International Airport has reached its upmost capacity, therefore a new plan must quickly be envisaged to move with the extensions work that will move the airport to the second phase conceded to handle 12 million passengers.
The new facilities at the airport have been launched during the late Premiership of martyr Rafic Hariri in 2002.
