TOKYO, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks ended slightly lower in the morning session Wednesday as the U.S. Congress remained deadlocked ahead of Thursday's deadline to raise the nation's debt ceiling.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was down 23.44 points, or 0. 16 percent, from Tuesday at 14,418.10.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 2.83 points, or 0.24 percent, at 1, 194.64.
Decliners were led by consumer finance, food and mining issues, while gainers included insurers, oil companies and tire makers.
