TOKYO, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- Japan on Monday said it hopes the United States could quickly address the latest federal budget standoff which may lead to a possible government shutdown in the world's largest economy.
Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said at a press conference that Japan hopes the problem will be resolved quickly, local media quoted the top government spokesman as saying.
Suga added that it does not believe, based on past experiences, that the problem will immediately have an impact throughout the economy, referring to a similar occurrence in 1996 that triggered a partial shutdown of the U.S. government over political standoff on fiscal policy.
Monday, Nikkei index ended 2.06 percent lower, reaching its lowest level in about two weeks amid the concerns over the potential negative impact of U.S. budget problems.
Part of the U.S. government will shut down unless the congress passes by midnight Monday a budget for the new fiscal year starting Tuesday.
