WASHINGTON, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. economy added a further 169,000 jobs in August, while the unemployment rate inched down to 7.3 percent, the Labor Department said on Friday.
The August reading hit the lowest level since December 2008, down from 8.1 percent a year ago. But the job growth was slightly below what economists expected.
The private sector added 152,000 jobs, and the payroll in governments of different levels rose by 17,000.
The total number of unemployed in the country was largely unchanged at 11.3 million in August.
