SINGAPORE, March 15 (Xinhua) -- Singapore's retail sales in January fell 2 percent year on year, largely due to sharply lower retail sales from food and beverage outlets and department stores, the Department of Statistics said on Friday.

It said the fall was a result of the base effect, as the Chinese New Year fell in January in 2012, but it fell in February in 2013.

In the food and beverage services sector, retail sales dipped 4. 9 percent year on year in January. In particular, receipts of restaurants decreased 11.1 percent.

Excluding motor vehicles, the retail sales went down by 4.9 percent year on year.
