Mexico's Carlos Slim richest man on earth: Hurun Report

BEIJING, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- Mexico's telecommunications tycoon Carlos Slim, 73, is the richest man on earth with a 66 billion U.S. dollar fortune, according to the Hurun Report released Thursday in Beijing.

He is followed by the most successful investor in the United States, Warren Buffett, who is worth 58 billion U.S. dollars

The report, best known for its annual Hurun China Rich List, released the Hurun Global Rich List 2013, ranking the 1,453 U.S. dollar billionaires currently in the world.

The Zara Founder Amancio Ortega, from Spain, makes the top three with 55 billion U.S. dollars of wealth. Bill Gates slips out of the top three to fourth with 54 billion U.S. dollars, according to the report.

Li Ka-shing, 85, from Hong Kong, is the richest man in China with 32 billion U.S. dollars.

Asia leads other continents with 608 billionaires, followed by North America's 440 and Europe's 324. The United States and China dominate with 408 and 317 billionaires respectively, followed by Russia, Germany and India, it said.

Moscow is the billionaire capital of the world with 76 billionaires on the list, followed by New York's 70, Hong Kong's 54 and Beijing's 41, according to the report.

Real estate, technology, media and telecommunications, investments and retail are the most common sources of wealth, it said.

Seven of the top 10 real estate tycoons in the world live in China, according to the report.

China has one more billionaire listed on its stock exchanges than the United States, with 212 individuals compared with 211 listed in the United States. The Hong Kong, Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges have witnessed huge expansion in the past decade, it said.

The average age of the billionaires on the list is 63. One in ten is female, it said.

Established as a research unit in 1999 by British accountant Rupert Hoogewerf, Hurun Report Inc. has grown into a leading luxury publishing group based in Shanghai. It has four luxury magazines, the Hurun Research Institute and a business events division targeting China's entrepreneurs and high net worth individuals.
