TOKYO, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- Nikkei closed 0.84 percent higher Wednesday on optimistic outlook of global economy, finishing at its highest level since September 2008.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was up 95.94 points, or 0.84 percent, from Tuesday to 11,468.28, with briefly hitting 11,510.52 in the day.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 10.09 points, or 1.05 percent, at 973. 70.
Gainers were led by paper, utilities and insurance issues, while decliners included steelmakers, brokerages and tire makers.
The turnover was about 1,854.3 billion yen (about 19.84 billion U.S. dollars).
