TOKYO, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- Japanese consumer confidence improved significantly in January, the first time in five months, the government said Tuesday.

The seasonally adjusted index rose 4.1 points to 43.3 from December's 39.2, the largest increase since the current survey was introduced in April 2004, the Cabinet Office said.

The increase indicates that the Japanese people remain optimistic about Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's economic policies.

The Cabinet Office revised upward its basic assessment of the index for the first time in a year, saying consumer confidence shows improvement.
