TOKYO, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- Stocks staged a rebound Thursday in Tokyo as institutional investors engaged in so-called window dressing on the second-to-last trading day in the first half of fiscal 2012.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 43.17 points, or 0.48 percent, at 8,949.87. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 3.05 points, or 0.41 percent, at 745.59.
Major gainers included glass makers, utility suppliers and pharmaceutical makers, while the airline, paper and service sectors logged the biggest losses.
Turnover during the day's trading reached 1.1640 trillion yen ( about 15 billion U.S. dollars). (1 yen = 0.0129 U.S. dollar)
