AT&T says iPhone 5 sales set record

HOUSTON, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- U.S. telecom giant AT&T said on Monday that it has set a sales record with Apple's new iPhone 5 over the weekend, as customers ordered more iPhone 5 from AT&T than any previous model both on its first day of preorders and over the weekend.

But the Texas-based company did not give the exact number of devices sold during the first weekend after iPhone 5 went on sale.

Apple on Monday said that iPhone 5 preorders topped 2 million in 24 hours, more than double the amount of preorders it had for iPhone 4S.

AT&T said in a news release posted online on Monday that iPhone 5 is still available for preorders online and will be available at its stores starting the coming Friday.

The latest iPhone model has a bigger screen that creates room for another row of icons and lets widescreen movies fit better.

Customers of iPhone 5 also can talk while surfing the web, AT&T said.

The new iPhone will also come with the capability to connect to the fastest new wireless data networks in the United States and overseas, it added.
