TOKYO, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- Nikkei opened sharply higher Wednesday on hopes of U.S. additional monetary easing.

In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 110.90 points, or 1.26 percent, from Tuesday to 8,914. 21, its highest intraday mark since July 10.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 7.89 points, or 1.06 percent, at 751. 59.
