Rwandan peacekeeper kills 4 colleagues in Central African Republic

KIGALI, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- A Rwandan soldier serving under UN peacekeeping mission in Central Africa Republic opened fire on comrades early Saturday, killing four of them and wounded eight others before shot dead himself, Rwanda's Defence and Military spokesperson said Saturday.

The incident occurred on Saturday at around 5:45 a.m. local time in Bangui, at Rwanda Battalion Headquarters. The casualties were immediately evacuated to Level two Hospital in Bangui, spokesperson Brigadier General Joseph Nzabamwita said in a statement.

Nzabamwita said investigations have immediately commenced to establish the motive behind this deplorable shooting of colleagues.

"We suspect terrorism without ruling out mental illness to be the cause," Brigadier General Nzabamwita said while sending heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and the entire Rwanda Defence Forces fraternity.

Since January 2014, Rwanda has deployed battalion of 800 soldiers to reinforce the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in the Central African Republic.

In addition, another special forces comprising of 140 Rwandan police officers, who are part of Rwanda's elite Police Unit, have been deployed to be stationed in Bangui to conduct patrols, ensure protection of VIPs, key installations and other escort duties, it said.

声明说,当天上午,联合国驻中非共和国多层面综合稳定团(中非稳定团)一名卢旺达籍维和士兵在军营里开枪打死4名战友、打伤8人,此人随后自杀身亡。

受伤士兵已被送往联合国中非稳定团医院接受救治。

正在调查此事的卢旺达军方称,不排除行凶士兵患有精神疾病的可能。

2014年4月,联合国安理会通过决议,决定设立中非稳定团。中非稳定团现由约10750名军事人员、2080名警察和20名惩戒干事组成。卢旺达向中非稳定团派出800名军事人员和140名警察。今年4月,安理会通过决议,决定将中非稳定团任务期限延长至2016年4月30日。
