100 killed in tribal clashes in Sudan's Darfur

KHARTOUM, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- At least 100 people were killed in the latest clashes between Messiria and Salamat tribes in Sudan 's Darfur region, official Sudan Radio reported Saturday.

"Clashes broke out between Messiria and Salamat tribes in Um Dokhon area in Central Darfur State, which resulted in the killing of around 100 people and injuring of dozens," the radio reported in its mobile news service.

The fighting ceased after local authorities and security forces intervened, the report said, noting that the authorities were conducting comprehensive listing for losses the clashes left.

Meanwhile, Assudan Newspaper, an independent electronic newspaper, reported that some Chadian soldiers were also killed during the tribe clashes in Um Dokhon.

"Chadian soldiers, who were part of a joint Sudanese-Chadian patrol on the border, were killed during the battles between the two tribes in Darfur region," the paper quoted what it termed as " humanitarian source" as saying.

Up to now, the Sudanese army spokesman has made no comments on the clashes.

The tribal clashes in Darfur added another dimension to the armed conflict in the region which has been suffering from a civil war since 2003.

Two days ago, the United Nations warned against outbreak of tribal clashes between Messiria and Salamat in Central Darfur State, disclosing that it had received field reports showing that the two tribes were mobilizing their groups in areas of Um Dokhon, Bendasi and Mukjar in the state.

Clashes between the two tribes in last June and July have led to the death of at least 136 people. The UN said around 4,000 people have fled their homes due to the tension in Central Darfur State.

Khartoum, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- The Sudanese army has repulsed an attack by rebels of the Revolutionary Front against Kurtala area in South Kordofan state, Khartoum's Al-Sahafa daily reported Wednesday.

"The Sudanese Armed Forces and other regular forces on Tuesday repulsed an attack by the rebels of the Revolutionary Front against Kurtala area, some 25 km east of Habila locality in South Kordofan. Sudan launches major military campaign to end armed rebellion

KHARTOUM, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- Sudan's Defence Minister Abdul- Rahim Mohamed Hussein Tuesday declared beginning of the biggest military campaign to end armed rebellion in Sudan's Darfur region and Blue Nile and South Kordofan States on the border with South Sudan.

"We have greatly prepared and our forces have moved at the different axis to end the rebellion", said Hussein in a statement he presented to the Sudanese parliament Tuesday.  Full story

Sudan's Darfur region facing insecurity, limited progress in peace process

UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Sudan's Darfur region is facing limited progress in the peace process, a troubling security situation and the continued need for substantial humanitarian assistance, officials representing the United Nations and the African Union (AU) said here Wednesday.

39 killed in tribal clashes in Sudan's Darfur region

KHARTOUM, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- At least 39 people were killed on Wednesday in clashes between two tribes in Sudan's Darfur region, local media Ashrouq net reported.

The armed clashes lasting for an hour took place between members of Ma'liya and Rizaigat tribes in Bakheet area of Abu Karina, leaving 39 people dead and 47 others injured from the both sides, said Osman Qassim, commissioner of Abu Karinka locality in East Darfur State. Full story
