DAR ES SALAAM, March 29 (Xinhua) -- A 16-storey building on Friday morning collapsed in Dar es Salaam's sprawling central business district, killing three people and injuring 17 others.

Three bodies have been recovered from the ruining of the collapsed building and 17 others were injured, rescuers told a Xinhua reporter.

There were more than 60 people inside the building under construction when it suddenly fell apart. Bulldozers were sent to the site and operated to remove the remaining.

Police Spokesperson ASP Adivera told Xinhua on the phone that it was true the incident has happened but would not give details.

An assistant to Dar es Salaam Special Zone Regional Commander Suleiman Kova, said it is too early to give the correct figure of victims of the incident, adding that rescue work was still going on.

However he said the collapsed building was next to Shia Ithnaasheri Mosque along Zanaki and Indira Gandhi Streets, and that it was not clear whether those who died and injured were among the workers constructing the building.

"Today is Easter Friday, a public holiday, and most people are resting in their homes. It is therefore unlikely that those killed or injured were workers constructing the building," a witness told Xinhua.

Collapse of buildings under construction were a common thing in Dar es Salaam, due to the short-time period of construction and substandard building materials.
