Myanmar's House of Representatives elects U Win Myint as candidate for presidential run

NAY PYI TAW, March 23 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar's House of Representatives (Lower House) on Friday elected U Win Myint, former speaker of the House of Representatives (Lower House) as vice president, who will compete with other two existing vice presidents for the presidency vacancy left by U Htin Kyaw, who announced resignation on Wednesday for health reasons.

The other two existing vice presidents are U Myint Swe and U Henry Van Thio.

U Win Myint from Tammwe constituency, Yangon region was elected as vice president by the presidential electoral college of the House of Representatives and will represent the Lower House to take part in the president election next week.

U Win Myint beat against U Thaung Aye from Pyawbwe constituency, Mandalay region at a meeting held in Nay Pyi Taw to secure as a candidate for presidential election.

The current parliament and government began its term of five years from February and April 2016 respectively under the leadership of the ruling National League for Democracy which won the absolute majority of the parliamentary seats in the 2015 general election.
