MOSCOW, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- Three people were trapped underground in a coal mine in Russia's Kemerovo region located in southwestern Siberia after rocks collapsed in its ventilation shaft, the regional government said on Wednesday.

At the time of the accident, 102 miners were underground. Ninety-nine of the miners managed to make it to the surface following the accident, it said in a statement.

Communication with the three trapped miners has been established and they have been supplied with air for breathing, the statement continued.

Two rescue teams were working on the site of the accident, it added.

The mine, Yesaulskaya, is part of the Russian EVRAZ metals and mining company, which is one of the world's largest steel producers.

An explosion of methane gas at Yesaulskaya on February 9, 2005 killed eight miners and 17 rescue workers.
