LANZHOU, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- A collection of thangkas, or traditional Tibetan Buddhist scroll paintings, has been put on display for the first time in Israel from Monday.
About 100 thangkas are displayed, in the city of Haifa, for three days to show the essence and style of Tibetan thangkas and culture.
"The collection on display is an encyclopedia of the thangka art form. It allows the Israeli public to appreciate the unique Chinese art form at close range," said Gesang Chi, manager of a Tibetan culture company in the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Gannan in northwest China's Gansu Province, which owns the scrolls.
The exhibition will also feature Tibetan songs and dances by artists from Gannan.
Thangka is a form of silk painting that dates back to the Tibetan Tubo Kingdom 1,200 years ago. It was listed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009.
