UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday strongly condemned a terrorist attack on a church in Quetta, Pakistan, that caused multiple deaths.

In a statement issued through his spokesman Stephane Dujarric, the UN chief extended his condolences to the families of the victims and wished speedy recovery to those injured. He called for the perpetrators of the attack to be brought to justice, said the statement.

A suicide bomber detonated his explosives at the gate of the Bethel Memorial Methodist church in the southwestern Pakistani city of Quetta, and a second attacker fired upon Sunday worshippers, before being killed by security forces. At least eight people were killed and dozens of others were wounded in the attack.

The Islamic State terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
