NEW DELHI, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- A 38-year-old Argentine woman was attacked and robbed by three youths in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, police said Monday.

The incident took place in the state's holy town of Varanasi, the parliamentary constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, days after a Japanese tourist was drugged and robbed by a fake tourist guide at a Buddhist holy place near the same city.

"The woman, who has been living in Varanasi for the past 12 years, was slapped thrice and robbed by three men while she was meditating on the banks of the Ganges river in Varanasi," local police chief Dinesh Kumar Singh told the media.

Police said they have launched a major manhunt to track down the criminals. "We have already shown photographs of 20 suspects to the woman but the accused were not among them. The accused will be arrested soon," he said.

Last week, 20-year-old Akeero Tanaka from Tokyo was drugged and robbed by a fake tourist guide in Sarnath, a Buddhist holy place near Varanasi, hours after he arrived there.

The guide allegedly befriended Tanaka and then offered him a soft drink laced with sedatives, and he fell unconscious after drinking it, only to wake up and found he had been robbed of money and other valuables.
