RIO DE JANEIRO, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- A total of 25.8 percent of Brazilians aged 16-29 are not currently working or in school, said the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) on Friday.

According to IBGE, the figure has increased in the past five years, from 10.5 million youngsters not working or studying in 2012, or 22.8 percent of the population in this age bracket, to 11.6 million people this year.

The main reason for the growth lies in the rising unemployment in Brazil, said the agency. The so-called "no-nos" (no work, no school) has increased since the year 2014 when the Latin American country began to face a recession. Before that, the number had remained stable.

"The young are the ones who suffer the most from the crisis in the job market," said IBGE analyst Cintia Simoes Agostinho, who pointed out that youngsters make up of 28.2 percent of the population, but account for 54.9 percent of the unemployed.

According to the agency, racial and gender inequalities are prominent among the unemployed youngsters.
