WINDHOEK, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- Namibia recorded a trade deficit of 612 million U.S. dollars in the third quarter, up from 608 million dollars in 2016, according to Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA).

Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA) said on Thursday in the Third Quarter Trade Statistics 2017 report that the widening of trade deficit by 0.6 percent was due to a decline in export.

"Overall exports declined by 2.5 percent and imports plunged by 1.4 percent in the same quarter last year," said NSA Statistician General Alex Shimuafeni.

According to Shimuafeni, the key export markets for Namibia were South Africa, Botswana, Switzerland, China and Spain.

In terms of commodities, diamonds, jewellery and precious metals, fish, metal ores and concentrates, copper cathodes and live animals were the major export products accounting for 75.1 percent of overall export.

Shimuafeni said that imports to Namibia were mainly sourced from South Africa, Bulgaria, China, Botswana and Zambia.
