TRIPOLI, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- Libya's eastern-based army commander Khalifa Haftar on Wednesday met with EU ambassador to Libya Bettina Muscheidt in the eastern city of Benghazi to discuss the latest developments in the country, an army official told Xinhua.

Haftar, who returned from Cairo on Tuesday, discussed with Muscheidt the means to solve the Libyan crisis, as well as the international efforts to end it, the official said on condition of anonymity.

Benghazi, Libya's second largest city and the birthplace of the 2011 uprising that toppled former leader Muammar Gaddafi, has witnessed a three-year war between the army led by Haftar and extremist groups.

In June, Haftar announced the takeover of the entire city of Benghazi after defeating the rival armed groups, but some militants remain in the city and use landmines to cause damage.

Following the 2011 uprising, Libya has been struggling to make a democratic transition amid insecurity and political division.
