Ukraine's Christmas-tree producing region reduces quota for tree-cutting

KIEV, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- Ukraine's western Zakarpattya region, one of the country's major producers of fresh Christmas trees, has reduced the quota for tree-cutting this year by about 25 percent, local authorities said on Tuesday.

In 2017, the region will sell 26,552 trees compared with 35,552 trees in 2016, Zakarpattya regional forestry administration said in a statement.

It gave no reasons for the quota reduction, but local experts said it could be linked to environmental concerns.

Zakarpattya is known for its magnificent coniferous trees. In 2011, a 30-meter-tall pine tree from Zakarpattya was erected at St. Peter's Square, the central square of Vatican.
