BEIJING, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator said Tuesday that the society should have confidence in the people's congress system.
Zhang Dejiang, chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, made the remarks at a symposium on the theory and practical innovation of the people's congress system.
He called for adherence to the development of democratic socialism.
"The system of people's congress has played an important part in ruling the country in accordance with the law," Zhang said.
People's congresses should ensure that the people exercise state power and improve the system of socialist laws with Chinese characteristics, with the Constitution at the core, he said.
"The NPC and its Standing Committee should improve and innovate the people's congress system under the leadership of the Communist Party of China Central Committee," Zhang added.
