BANGKOK, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- Fishing nets are being removed from around an island in the Andaman Sea off southern Thailand to protect natural marine resources.

Wichai Somroop, head of a branch office of Thailand's Department of Marine and Coastal Resources in Phang Nga province, about 760 km south of Bangkok, confirmed on Tuesday that the authorities have been removing the fishing nets around Lipi island off the coastal province to protect coral reefs and other aquatic animals and plants in the lower part of the Andaman Sea.

The fishing nets, earlier laid by local fishermen covering some 1,800 square meters in the sea around the island off Phang Nga province, have adversely affected the corals and other aquatic lives, Wichai said.

The authorities will see to it that such fishing gear, viewed as detrimental to the ecological qualities of the surrounding marine and coastal resources as well as tourist beaches, will not be practically allowed for use elsewhere in the sea off southern Thailand, though the fishermen may not have been prohibited by law as yet, according to the official.
