RABAT, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- Morocco's ruling Islamist Justice and Development Party (PJD) held on Saturday its 8th national congress to elect a new leader.

The party has witnessed an unprecedented crisis as some of its members sought to change the party's internal laws to pave the way for its charismatic leader Abdelilah Benkirane to serve for a third term as PJD's secretary general.

The move, however, was overruled by the party's national council in an extraordinary session in November.

During his two mandates, which started in 2008, Benkirane has led the PJD to three major wins in Morocco's local and parliamentary elections, respectively in 2011, 2015 and 2016. He also led the government from 2011 to 2017.

A total of 2,373 delegates are taking part in the two-day national congress of PJD.
