NEW DELHI, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- The Indian navy chief has urged the country's government to withdraw an order that caps the education expenses of the children of killed soldiers.

"This small gesture would assure the families of our brave women and men that the nation cares for them and their sacrifices are truly appreciated by the government," Indian Navy chief Admiral Sunil Lanba wrote to Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

"These personnel have made the supreme sacrifice for the country and the provision of educational concessions to their wards is a small gesture to recognize their commitment to the defence of the country," he added.

Officials said Wednesday that the Indian government is reconsidering its decision that limits the education reimbursement to the children of soldiers who are missing, disabled or killed in action to 10,000 rupees (150 U.S. dollars).

The Indian government is currently funding the education of some 3,400 children of killed soldiers under a scheme that was introduced after the 1971 War.
