KABUL, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Afghan army found and defused 70 rounds of landmines and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) within a day, diverting numerous potential explosions elsewhere in the country, defense ministry said Tuesday.

"The Afghan National Army (ANA) engineering teams found and neutralized 70 rounds of IEDs, landmines and roadside bombs in different provinces within the last 24 hours," the ministry said in a statement.

Taliban militants and Islamic State (IS) fighters have been using the home-made IEDs to target security forces but the lethal weapons also inflict casualties on civilians.

On Nov. 28, eight civilians, including three women were killed, and two people injured when a vehicle touched off an IED in southern Kandahar province.
