KAMPALA, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- At least 11 people were killed on spot and nine others seriously injured in a Friday night road accident in the central Ugandan district of Mpigi, a traffic police spokesperson said here on Saturday.
Charles Ssebambulidde, the directorate of traffic and road safety spokesperson, told Xinhua by telephone that the accident occurred following a head-on collision between a passenger commuter taxi and a Toyota Ipsum at Bboza trading center along the Mpigi-Butambala road.
The Ipsum was carrying occupants returning from a traditional introduction ceremony while the commuter taxi was taking people for the last funeral rites due on Saturday.
"The driver of the commuter taxi lost control ramming onto an Ipsum from the opposite direction," said Ssebamulidde.
"Six people aboard the Ipsum car died while five others in the commute taxi perished in the accident," he said.
The injured were rushed to Mpigi Health Centre IV and Mulago National Referral Hospital in the capital, Kampala
The police attributed the cause of the road accident to overspeeding, careless and reckless driving.
Uganda registers at least 20,000 accidents with over 2,000 deaths each year, making it one of the countries with the highest road accident fatality rates in the world, according to police figures.
