ANAHEIM, United States, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- Rio Olympic champion Sopita Tanasan from Thailand dominated women's 53kg at the 2017 world weightlifting championships as she claimed a clean sweep of the snatch, the clean and jerk and total golds on Thursday.
The 53kg category is supposed to be an intriguing contest as defending world champion and two times Olympic champion Hsu Shu-ching of Chinese Taipei would have put up a fierce competition against Tanasan, who has moved up to the 53kg having won gold in Rio Olympics last year in the 48kg category.
The clash came to a sudden end when Hsu injured her right arm in the third attempt in the snatch and had to give up the clean and jerk event, seeing her Thai rival storm all the way to the overall title on a total of 210kg without a hitch.
The Thai star also won the snatch with 96kg and clean and jerk on 114kg.
"I felt so happy to win the world title and plus the Olympic gold I think I became much more confident in the event. I worked so hard so I think I've earned it," said Tanasan, adding that she felt sorry for her opponnet Hsu but that it's part of the game.
Hsu, crying hard after injuring her arm, settled for a silver in the snatch event with her second lift of 93kg.
Kristina Shermetova of Turkmenistan came third in both the snatch and clean and jerk which set her up for an overall runner-up finish on 204kg.
The overall bronze went the way of Hidilyn Diaz of the Philippines on 199kg.
