Casualties feared as blast rocks Afghan capital Kabul: witness

KABUL, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- Casualties were feared as a blast ripped through northern neighborhood of Afghanistan's capital Kabul on Friday, a witness said.

"The bomb blast occurred roughly at 06:55 a.m. (local time) in Sarah-e-Shamali locality with a big bang, causing panic among the residents in Police District 11 of the city," Roya Khojazada told Xinhua.

The blast was followed by siren of ambulances and police vehicles. People in the area were sleeping as they were enjoying Friday's day off.

Friday is national holiday in Afghanistan.

"A bomb attack struck a police vehicle near Sarah-e-Shamali Square. We still cannot provide details on causalities. There is fear of possible causalities," a security source told Xinhua anonymously, adding more information will be shared with media later by Kabul police.

Police were investigating the incident.

Security forces have cordoned off the area for precautionary measures, he said.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.
