Foreign affiliates create 55-bln-USD value to Malaysia last year

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- Foreign affiliates in Malaysia generated a value of 222.7 billion ringgit (54.49 billion U.S. dollars) last year, underpinned mainly by Asian foreign affiliates, Malaysia's statistics department said Thursday.

According to the department, Asian region had the highest number of foreign affiliates in Malaysia with a share of 64.6 percent, or 1,914 affiliates.

Among them, 6.6 percent were from China. Meanwhile, Europe and America were another two key regions after Asia, accounting for 21 percent and 12.2 percent of total foreign affiliates respectively.

There were 2,964 foreign affiliates in 2016 as compared to 2,950 affiliates in the previous year.

Of the total generated value, the manufacturing sector remained dominant, contributing 57.1 percent, followed by services sector with a share of 34.4 percent.

The statistics on foreign affiliates in Malaysia portray the performance of foreign-controlled companies in Malaysia which own more than 50 percent of the equity.
