BANGKOK, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- Former ASEAN secretary general and Thailand's former foreign minister Surin Pitsuwan died of a heart attack on Thursday.
Surin died of the heart attack at the age of 68 at a Bangkok hospital, said Democrat Party Secretary General Juti Krairirk.
Surin was the ASEAN secretary general between 2008 and 2013, the Thai foreign minister during the time of ex-premier Chuan Leekpai between 1997 and 2001.
Surin, who was a deputy leader of the Democrat Party, the country's oldest, was tipped to contest the next gubernatorial race for the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.
He was a seven-time MP of his home province of Nakhon Sri Thammarat in southern Thailand.
