COLOMBO, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka Disaster Management Center warned people on Wednesday to refrain from fishing and naval activities in the sea off the country due to inclement weather conditions, a spokesman here said on Wednesday.

Spokesman for the Disaster Management Center, Pradeep Kodippili told Xinhua that heavy rain up to 150 milliliters had been forecast within the next 24 hours starting from 15:30 (local time) on Wednesday in the provinces of the southern part of the country.

He said people had been kept on alert on possible floods in the areas with rivers and landslide in the mountainous areas.

According to the Disaster Management Center, gusty wind will be up to 70 to 80 kilometers per hour, therefore it is appropriate for people to refrain from naval and fishing activities in the sea.

"We have alerted all the authorities including the police to be ready to face any possible disaster situation. We asked people to stand alert all the time as heavy rain is expected," he said.

Sri Lanka experienced floods earlier this year, which claimed more than 200 lives.
