ABUJA, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Nigerian army on Tuesday confirmed that 14 Boko Haram fighters were killed over the weekend in a military operation aimed at clearing remnants of the terror group in the country's northeast region.
Army spokesman Sani Usman said 30 civilians held by the terror group were rescued during the operation, in Bama district of the northern state of Borno, last Saturday.
Usman said one Boko Haram fighter was captured.
The troops cleared some terrorists' hideouts in eight villages in Bama during the operation.
Last Wednesday, Nigerian government forces killed an unknown number of Boko Haram fighters and destroyed a bomb-making factory in an airstrike in Borno.
Nigeria has made considerable gains against the terror group, dislodging its fighters from the Sambisa Forest, the group's largest training camp in the country, early this year.
Boko Haram has been blamed for the death of more than 20,000 people and displacement of 2.3 million others in Nigeria since 2009.
