LANZHOU, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- A play warning against the perils of religious cults will be performed in northwest China's Gansu this week.
The play "Where the Soul Belongs" tells the story of a school teacher who joins a cult, talks his wife into joining, then refuses to send his sick daughter to hospital as "God" can cure her. After his daughter dies and his wife commits suicide, he realizes the error of his ways, but it is too late.
"The play combines many real-life stories in order to make it both educational and convincing," said Zhu Heng, head of the Gansu provincial theater.
"It took us two years to write the script and rehearse, and the script was revised more than ten times by many national and provincial level writers and directors," Zhu said. "We want to tell a realistic story to help people realize the serious consequences of cults."
Gansu authorities have used a variety of media to discourage people from joining cults, including anime, short films, posters and online games.
